Chia Seeds

The oilseed Chía (Salvia hispánica) is the richest natural source of essential omega-3 fatty acids, including a-linolenic acid, all very rare in the world. Gluten free, it is suitable for people suffering from gluten intolerance (celiac). This food crop comes from America and has been cultivated since the Aztec times, pertaining together with maize and beans to the staple foods in the colonization times.

Due to its high nutritional value, Chia seed is considered a food with great potential to improve human nutrition. Among its many properties, it helps support healthy cholesterol and triglycerides, blood coagulation, skin cells, membranes, mucus and nerves as well as digestion because of its high fiber content. Moreover, very valuable Chia components for human nutrition include: antioxidants, fiber, protein, vitamin B1, B2, B3, and minerals such as phosphor, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper.

Chia seeds are consumed all over the world in such food applications as: bread, breakfast cereals, cereal bars, muffins, cakes, cookies, etc.
